Channelview Athletic Complex Channelview ISD | Channelview, TX
Located in the distant shadow of a famous Texas monument, Channelview Athletic Complex completes the multi-decade vision of the District’s modernization. Proper planning by past Board Members placed the high school adjacent to this property. The new vision included modern facilities accessible to students during the school day.
A congested site plan demanded precise site dimensions and final installation dimensions. Meetings with subcontractors and suppliers were conducted during the design process to verify overall and specific measurement of materials, necessary installation clearances and finish products. At times, specific design challenges were addressed with physical models being assembled. A Design Committee, comprised of the board, administration, coaches and community members toured new local facilities to derive issues of community impact, quality and quantity.
The property for this project was the old high school site for the District. The dated facilities were repurposed for maintenance, storage, special programs, food service and administrative offices. This project was phased (six other projects were being built during this time throughout the District) and had to be finished before programs could move from this property. As the weather was not cooperative during this year, the end date of each project was constantly changing during construction. The phasing of construction of major elements and the connecting services were consistently changing; therefore, our documentation had to be reconciled and new directions recommended and documented.
The property edges are near the floodplain elevation, so the detention required multiple design responses to accomplish both interim construction and final design requirements. Careful planning in the placement of the new buildings on the site resulted in full utilization of the property and creatively solved the challenging site problem.
