Galveston County Criminal Justice Center Galveston County | Galveston, TX
In 1997, Galveston County commissioned IBI Group to develop a long-range facilities master plan. After a year of carefully reviewing the existing overcrowded courthouse, aging HVAC systems and outdated building codes, a facility assessment and master plan was presented to the County.
The Galveston County Criminal Justice Center, a comprehensive judicial complex that consists of three buildings: a 1,171-bed jail facility (can be easily expanded up to 2,400 beds for future growth), a courthouse facility housing the County and District Courts, and a law enforcement facility shared by the County Sheriff’s office and the Galveston Police Department. The three areas were constructed simultaneously as part of a single campus complex.
The judicial facility and jail make up the major components of the 562,069 sq ft Galveston County Criminal Justice Center. The judicial portion houses the necessary court functions and departments, including courtrooms, jury assembly and district attorney’s offices.
“The complex was constructed near the entrance of Galveston Island, making it easily accessible to the entire community of Galveston. Buildings were designed to withstand hurricane force winds.”
